Short-film competition

To be organised as part of the Coimbatore Vizha


The best three films will be selected and awarded in each category

They will be screened on January 11


COIMBATORE: A short-film competition will be organised as part of the Coimbatore Vizha.

Students are encouraged to make films in any format (documentary/fiction/animation) with the focus on the dynamic history of Coimbatore or its culture. The films can also trace the city’s contributions towards modernisation and conservation of the environment.

Some of the aspects which can be dealt with are - the founders of modern Coimbatore, the earth quake and plague which shook the city in the 1900s, the early people, tribes and rulers of Coimbatore, and the people and institutions who contributed for the growth and development of the city. The legacy and brands of Coimbatore (the history behind naming of the places/streets, the Corporation, the Agricultural University, early educational institutions, hospitals, Bharathiar University, cotton cultivation, cotton mills, spinning mills, foundries, wet grinders, Annapoorna, Krishna Sweets, Angannan kadai).

Cultural symbols, places and practices which depict the cultural diversity and amity. (The historical deities like Plague Mariamman, Koniayamman, early churches and mosques, cultural movements, films and studios of Coimbatore, personalities who contributed towards enriching our culture).

The stories of development and destruction, (The story of the first fly over; the L&T bridge, theatres and halls, the story of housing, water bodies, the rivers, garbage, environment, ecology), the legacy of freedom fighters with Coimbatore (Va.Vu.Si, Tirupur Kumaran) and the stories of common men/women who silently contribute to sustain the vibrancies of the city, can be adopted.

A student can submit only one entry for each category. The length of the film should not exceed 10 minutes. The best three films will be selected and awarded in each category and will be screened on the final day of the Vizha (January 11, 2009).

All the film entries will be screened in the city at various venues of Coimbatore Vizha.

The rules and regulations are given in the attached entry form.

The last date for submission of the film is December 31.
