VIJAYAWADA: City archer Ch. Lenin, along with Amarinder Singh and Surinder, helped India win the gold medal in the Olympic round of the first Asian compound archery championship that concluded at Yangon (Myanmar). According to information reaching here on Saturday, India won the gold in the men’s team event, while Myanmar and Thailand bagged the silver and bronze respectively. In the women’s team event, India’s Ch. Yogitha, Gagandeep Kaur and Manjit Kaur lost to Myanmar in the final and settled for the silver. In the men’s individual event, Lenin took the silver medal. Sathavahana triumphsSathavahana College won the Acharya Nagarjuna University inter-Collegiate netball women’s championship by topping the league table, here on Saturday. Montessori Mahila Kalasala and Dr. KRR College (Duggirala) finished second and third respectively. The results (final league matches): Sathavahana bt Montessori 17-14; Montessori bt Dr. KRR 20-6; Dr. KRR bt Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala 15-10. Easy for PrakashCh. Prakash of Krishna blanked Sai Nitish of Nellore 25-0, while A. Pavan of Vizag outplayed Guntur’s P. Raju 25-0 in the first round of the 37th sub-junior inter-district carrom championship at the LVR & Sons Club at Guntur on Saturday. In the cadet girls’ segment, Alekhya of Nellore defeated Guntur’s A. Lakshmi 25-18. The three-day tournament was inaugurated by former minister Alapati Rajendra Prasad. Matches postponedThe Hyderabad Cricket Association informs that due to the non-availability of the Parade grounds all the league matches scheduled for December 14 at the venue stand postponed. AU’s tournamentsAndhra University’s inter-Zone inter-Collegiate tournaments for men in different events will commence on December 24. The volleyball tournament will be held at the SAS Government Degree College, Narayanapuram (West Godavari district) on December 24 and 25 and badminton and cricket at the Govt. Degree College, Rajahmundry on December 26 and 27 and from December 26 to 29 respectively, while the SAS Govt. Degree College (Narayanapuram) will also host the kabaddi, kho-kho, table tennis, basketball, ball badminton and chess tournaments from January 3 to 5 next year. The Director of Physical Education, M. Syam Babu, also said the inter-Collegiate tournaments-cum-team selection trials in men’s hockey and weightlifting, along with best physique events, will be held at the Government College in Rajahmundry on December 22 and 23 and at the Sir C.R. Reddy College, Eluru from January 10 and 11, 2009 respectively. Entries for the hockey tournament close on December 18 and should be sent to the organising secretary at the venue. January 7, 2009 is the last date for entries for weightlifting and best physique competitions.
