He was arrested on cheating charge Ashok Kheny of NICE has filed a police complaint Bangalore: Film producer and director Indrajit Lankesh said on Saturday that his arrest on Friday was politically motivated and intended to stop him from writing against the State Government. Speaking to presspersons after securing bail, Mr. Lankesh said the complaint of cheating filed against him by Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE) managing director Ashok Kheny was a civil dispute. “There was no need to direct the wing of the Central Crime Branch which investigates organised crime to probe this case,” he said. The way he was arrested showed the police were acting according to directions from political bosses, he alleged. On Friday, sleuths of the Organised Crime wing of the CCB arrested Mr. Lankesh in connection with Mr. Kheny’s complaint of cheating to the tune of Rs. 15 crore given to produce two Kannada movies and one Hindi movie. Mr. Kheny also accused Mr. Lankesh of misappropriating funds. “The police dragged and took me away in such a way that they take criminals,” Mr. Lankesh said. Mr. Lankesh said Mr. Kheny filed the complaint in March to counter the complaint filed by him in February in a cheque bounce case. Mr. Lankesh said he had given to the police all documents related to the transaction. Mr. Lankesh alleged that the State Government was in a hurry to take action fearing the adverse effect of his articles on the electorate during the byelections. Mr. Lankesh was produced before an Additional City Metropolitan Magistrate on Saturday. The magistrate released Mr. Lankesh on bail and directed him not to interfere in the police investigation.
