YMCA’s international centre to be ready in 16 months

Special Correspondent

The project to cost Rs. 16 crore

BANGALORE: Bangalore city will get a conference hall of international standards in about 16 months from now. The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) on Saturday laid the foundation for such an International Programme Centre which will have a sophisticated conference hall and 72 guest rooms at its premises on Nrupathunga Road in Bangalore.

YMCA Bangalore president A. Ebenezer, who laid the foundation stone, told The Hindu that the above project would be implemented at a cost of Rs. 16 crore. The proposed conference hall with a seating capacity of 300 persons would be one of the best such halls in the city. It would have state-of-the-art facilities for audio-visual presentation and video conferencing.

In addition to using the conference hall for its own programmes, the YMCA would allow other organisations to use the facility at economical rents, Dr. Ebenezer said while pointing out that the YMCA was basically a service-oriented organisation.

Terming the above project as a dream project of the YMCA, he said this would help the organisation to strengthen the ongoing social schemes.

YMCA general secretary S.V. Rathna Kumar said the association was operating several social schemes, including rehabilitating street children by providing job-oriented training to them. The association was holding tailoring classes for rural women and training in manufacturing of products such as making of candles and phenyl for poor women.

Several other programmes including sports and computer literacy, were being held at the association.

Dr. Ebenezer made it clear that the YMCA had dropped its earlier proposal for allowing joint development of its prestigious property on Nrupathunga Road with a private developer. “The episode is a closed chapter and we have even returned the money collected from the developer,” he said.
