T.S. Satyan

Bangalore: T.S. Satyan, one of the best-known photojournalists in India, has a simple piece of advice for anyone hoping to wield the camera: “There is beauty in everyday life for someone who can see with a discerning eye. The photographer must develop a unique way of looking at life and be able to spot the extraordinary in the ordinary. He must be able to record the meaning of life in the common gestures and situations of even ordinary people. The best pictures are very simple ones that touch the core of our hearts. Don’t take seriously the Kodak advertisement that proclaims: ‘You press the button and we do the rest’.”

Those who want to see how Mr. Satyan puts this meticulousness into practice can head for an exhibition of his works at Tasveer Gallery (off Kasturba Road) between December 18 and 31. The exhibition, titled “A Long Exposure”, marks his 85th birthday. Mr. Satyan’s pictures are marked by simplicity and a humanist essence. His works have been published in national and international newspapers. To mark the International Year of the Child in 1979, UNICEF sponsored and exhibition of his photographs at the U.N. headquarters in New York. He has authored several books, including a memoir. He has been awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India and an honorary doctorate in Literature by the University of Mysore.
