Nandita steals the show

CHALAKUDY: Nandita Krishnakumar left an ICSE school and joined Holy Angels last year so that she could play in the State School Games. After a year of waiting and a silver, she hit a high on Saturday and helped Thiruvananthapuram win the under-19 girls’ badminton team gold at the School Games here.

Thiruvananthapuram jolted defending champion Kozhikode 2-0 in the final.

“The victory has not sunk in yet, I’m yet to digest it,” said Nandita who won both her singles and doubles matches, with Deepa Titus. Ernakulam won the boys’ badminton title.

State women’s champion Adheena Latheef was in fine touch as Idukki defeated Kozhikode 3-1 and won the girls’ table tennis trophy, while Wynad pipped Palakkad 3-2 and bagged the boys’ title.

Meanwhile, Thiruvananthapuram bagged both the boys’ and girls’ under-19 tennis titles to make it three out of four in the event.

Palakkad led the points table in the under-19 section with 54 points and was closely followed by Ernakulam (50) with a couple of events to go. The results (under-19): Badminton: Boys’ final: Ernakulam bt Kozhikode 2-0 (Renjith Sunny bt Deepak Joseph 19-21, 21-19, 21-17; Renjith Sunny & Ravi Shankar bt Deepak Joseph & Angath 21-18, 21-14).

Girls’ final: Thiruvananthapuram bt Kozhikode 2-0 (Nandita Krishnakumar bt Nimisha 21-13, 21-10; Nandita & Deepa Titus bt Parvathy Suresh & Ruby 21-13, 21-16).

Tennis: Boys’ final: Thiruvananthapuram bt Palakkad 2-0 (Arun Raj bt Paul T. Wilson 6-0; S. Aravind bt A.C. Bipin 6-3).

Girls’ final: Thiruvananthapuram bt Palakkad 2-1 (Sneha Susan Thomas bt T. S. Saarika 6-0; Ranjitha Raju lost to G. Monica 4-6; Sneha & Ranjitha bt Saarika & Monica 6-1).

Table tennis: Boys’ final: Wynad bt Thrissur 3-2.

Girls’ final: Idukki bt Kozhikode 3-1 (Sreeranjini lost to Lakshmi Prabha 0-3; Adheena K. Latheef bt Anjali Vasudevan 3-0; Amal Tresa bt Aparna Sanil 3-0; Adheena Latheef bt Lakshmi Prabha 3-1).

Chess: Boys’ under-19: 1. R. Abhijith (Pkd, 4.5 pts from 5 rounds); 2. Mohammed Dilshad (Kzd, 4); 3. K. Athish (Kzd, 3.5).
