Akshit overcomes Manikandan

SIVAKASI: M.R. Manikandan of Tamil Nadu went down fighting 24-26, 21-23 to Akshit Mahajan of Haryana in a boys’ singles pre-quarterfinal encounter of the 33rd junior National badminton championship here on Saturday.

Akshit deceived his opponent on many occasions with his clever mix of shots. Manikandan too had his chances in the match, especially in the first game, but committed unforced errors at crucial junctures and squandered the opportunities.

Fighting back

Akshit started the second game on a positive note and raced to a 7-0 lead. However, the Tamil Nadu youngster fought back hard to level the scores. It was a neck to neck contest from then on, but Akshit, blessed with a good temperament, came out trumps.

Meanwhile, H. S. Pranoy of Kerala got the better of fifth seed Mayank Gole of Maharashtra in another pre-quarterfinal fixture.
