Chief Minister receives honorary doctorate degree

BANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurapa was conferred an honorary doctorate degree by the Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan, at a convocation of the university.

About 5,000 people, including a large number of non-resident Indians, attended the programme. Mr Yeddyurappa received the degree along with nearly 500 students who passed out of the university.

He was conferred the honorary doctorate for his contribution to public life.

The authorities permitted him to address the gathering after he received the doctorate, a practice not normally allowed. An overwhelmed Mr. Yeddyurappa said: “Today is a happy day in my life. It is indeed a great recognition. I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Saginaw Valley State University.”

He said: “I could not study much in the university system but I have learnt a great deal in my public life spanning over four decades. It is my pleasure to receive and dedicate this honour to the fellow farmers and rural people of my State.”

Dr. Gilberston, president, Saginaw Valley State University, conferred the degree. Among those present included the Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda, Minister for Primary Education, Vishveshwara Hegde kageri and Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, V.P. Baligar.

The Chief Minister unveiled a statue of Kittur Rani Chennamma and also the Kittur Rani Chennamma Friendship Room in the Regional Education Centre at Saginaw Valley State University.

The Chief Minister said: “I am indeed very happy, that Queen Chennamma will be remembered for ever, in this part of the world, thousands of miles away, from the kingdom of Kittur in India. Queen Chennamma, symbolises bravery, self-respect and spirit of freedom and liberty,” Mr. Yeddyurappa said.
