Ashwin in sole lead

Chennai: International Master Ashwin Jayaram made World under-16 champion B. Adhiban pay for overstretching a drawn position by defeating him and moving into the sole lead after seven rounds in the Sri Sai Ram Engineering Asian junior chess championships, here on Friday.

Ashwin, seeded fourth, beat second seed Adhiban with black after the latter let the former win a rook for minor piece in the middle-game. Ashwin is leading with six points.

Six players, Vidit Gujrathi, Lalith Babu, Rahul Sangma, S. Nitin, K. Priyasharshan and Vishnu Prasanna, are tied for the second place on 5.5 points.

Top seed Kruttika Nadig of Pune and defending champion Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata posted wins and moved into the lead with six points from seven games in the girls’ section.

They face each other on Saturday in what will certainly be the title-deciding game.
