Champions League T20 to be played next year

Chennai: The inaugural edition of the Champions League Twenty20 will now be played in India in October 2009. The 2008 event, put off after the terror strikes in Mumbai last month, has been cancelled.

Lalit Modi, chairman, Champions League Twenty20, said, "The inaugural edition of the Champions League Twenty20 will now be held in India in October 2009."

The decision was made after a tele-conference of the IPL Governing Council, consisting of founder Board members — Board of Control for Cricket in India, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa.

All aspects including the international calendar and the domestic schedules of the participating teams were discussed, said the Governing Council.

Six teams — two from each of the founding Board members — are confirmed as participants. The rest of the teams will be decided by the end of January 2009. Invitations will be extended to the winners and finalists of the respective countries’ domestic Twenty20 tournaments.

Meanwhile, the finance committee of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) met in Chennai on Friday. Officials attending the meeting confirmed that India’s forthcoming tour of Pakistan was not discussed. — Special Correspondent
