Tiwari comes to Jharkhand’s recue after Sreesanth’s blitz

Jamshedpur: Left-hand batsman Saurav Tiwari (125) steered Jharkhand to a respectable 291 for eight against Kerala on the first day of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group match at the Keenan stadium here on Friday.

Opting to bat first, Jharkhand suffered early setback when Indian speedster S. Sreesanth, playing his first Ranji match since recovering from a back injury, dismissed opener Manish Vardhan for 24 (51b, 3x4) in the 18th over.

The Team India seamer struck again to get middle-order Ishant Jaggi for a duck two overs later.

Opener Subrat Ghosh, playing cautiously at the other end, misread a delivery from medium pacer Sony Cheruvathur and edged a catch behind for 21 to leave the host struggling at 104 for three.

Tiwari came in following Jaggi’s departure and played an aggressive knock with 14 fours and a six to score 125 off 187 deliveries and steadied the innings in the company of Keshav Kumar.

Sreesanth, desperate to make a comeback to the Indian team after injury, returned with a haul of four for 60 in 17 overs. Cheruvathur, Nair and RW Gomez shared a wicket each. — PTI
