CM to inaugurate water project in January

Special Correspondent

UNVELING: M.K. Stalin, Local Administration Minister, inaugurating schemes in Ramanathapuram district on Friday.

RAMANATHAPURAM: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will inaugurate the Ramanathapuram drinking water project in January, said Minister for Local Administration M.K. Stalin.

He was speaking at a function organised here on Friday, where he gave away revolving funds to the tune of Rs.18 crore to self help groups and laid the foundation stone for various projects.

Mr. Stalin said the process of laying pipe lines, construction of overhead tanks and other works of Rs.616-crore scheme had been undertaken in a swift manner.

3 years needed

Though it was felt that it would take at least 3 years to complete the project, the Chief Minister while laying foundation stone for the it at Paramakudi in 2007, directed the officials to complete the works within 2 years.

The officials, who took it as a challenge, had expedited the works.

Around 95 percent of the works were already over.

Mr. Stalin added that though the current spell of rain had caused delay in executing the works, officials had been asked to complete them before Pongal so as to start water supply in that period.

Mr. Stalin said he felt that the Ramanathapuram drinking water project was most satisfying, as it would solve long-pending drinking water problem faced by the people of the district.

Accusing that the previous government gave little support to the SHGs, the Minister said the DMK government had been implementing several schemes to bolster the SHG movement.

The percentage of repayment of loans by SHGs was around 99 per cent. A sum of Rs.150 crore was allotted in the last budget for giving revolving funds to SHGs.

State Ministers K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, S. Thangavelan, K.R. Periakaruppan, Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar, and others took part.
