CHECKING OUT: Madurai Kamaraj University former Vice-Chancellor K. Aludiapillai, third from left, inaugurating industrial exhibition in Madurai on Friday. — MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (TANSIDCO) has written to the State Government seeking its consent for carrying out a diagnostic survey of clusters by Entrepreneurship Development Institute of Gujarat to enhance their competitiveness. To cost Rs. 75 lakhThe three-year study, which would cost Rs. 75 lakh, would focus on improving energy efficiency, upgrading technology and enhancing the skills of the workforce, TANSIDCO Chairman and Managing Director D. Rajendran said here on Friday. He was addressing the inaugural function of ‘Indexpo 2008’ industrial exhibition organised by Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA). Upon completing the detailed project report, the institute would suggest measures to implement its recommendations. Centre’s shareWhile the Central Government had sanctioned Rs. 10 lakh per year for the survey, already carried out at two clusters in North India, the State Government should also contribute an equal amount with the rest coming from the units. The Institute would hold a seminar for the units, in which they would be told the areas for improving their operations. In one such exercise, he said, the institute reduced the energy consumption by 10 per cent of a unit. “This study would help the small scale industries in Tamil Nadu face the competition from multinational corporations,” said Mr. Rajendran. K. Aludiapillai, former Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, who inaugurated the exhibition, said that the SSI sector, which created about 45 per cent of the nation’s employment opportunities, would weather the economic recession and had a bright future. Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA) president D. Gandhikumar said that such expositions would boost industrial activity in the region. MADITSSIA president P.T. Krishnamoorthy, Indexpo chairman Rm. Lakshminarayanan, Indexpo advisor S. Aravind and MADITSSIA secretary P. Sitaraman spoke.
