Enhancing manpower to fortify security further Law & order

Crime prevention and detection task of GRP is poised to become more effective, writes

R. Krishnamoorthy

Crime prevention and detection task of the Government Railway Police (GRP), Tiruchi, covering a vast jurisdiction right from Villuppuram to Kanyakumari in the railway divisions of Tiruchi and Madurai is poised to become more effective.

To fortify security further, the GRP authorities here have readied a proposal in deference to instructions from the Inspector General of Police, Uma Ganapathi Shasthri, for enhancing manpower to the extent of 350 additional personnel such that GRP outposts could be converted into full-fledged police stations manned by officers in the cadre of Sub-Inspectors.

The current composition of GRP, Tiruchi district is one Superintendent of Police, three Deputy Superintendents of Police, 13 Inspectors, 27 Sub-Inspectors and 650 personnel of other ranks. The outposts at Cuddalore, Karur, Kodai Road, Maniachi, Tenkasi, Nagapattinam, Manamadurai, are being manned by a head constable and four constables. Once they are converted into full-fledged police stations, there will be one sub-inspector and 20 personnel of other ranks in each station, GRP sources said.

The post of Inspector has been sought for Tuticorin and Tiruvarur GRP stations. All important stations are also to be equipped with commando police up to Vridachalam. And a new police station has been proposed for Srirangam. “Visible policing will erase the impression that railway stations are soft targets,” an official said, adding that with the increased strength, two personnel could be posted on a train beat.

In Tiruchi GRP station, where the need for additional manpower is highly felt, the strength is expected to go up to 150 from 100. GRP personnel posted in Tiruchi consisting of one inspector, four sub-inspectors and the rest comprising personnel in other ranks are responsible for the security at the railway stations in Karur and Pudukkottai and stations en route.

New planning of workload would be possible with the capacity addition, sources said. For instance, the sub-inspectors based in Tiruchi need not have to visit Pudukkottai on a frequent basis. The Sub-Inspector based at Karaikudi could be entrusted with the task of monitoring security in Pudukkottai, whereby the officials here could concentrate better on security of Tiruchi Railway Junction. At any given point of time, the Tiruchi Railway Junction is being manned by 10 to 15 personnel. Ideally there must be 30 personnel, sources said.

The GRP is also keen on strengthening the weaponry and vital equipments at its disposal. As per the proposal, the .303 rifles will be replaced with AK 47 and pistols. Other equipment for which the need has been sounded include CCTV, mine sweeper, scanner, hand-held metal detectors and door metal detectors.

In emergency situations, the GRP has been depending on the equipments borrowed from the district police. By acquiring them on a permanent basis, the GRP will be able to respond promptly, the official said.
