KARUR: Public in general and women in particular should be aware of their rights and only then societal development would take place, according to the Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission RM. Ramathaal. Speaking at a function organized here on Friday to mark the International Human Rights Day she pointed out that women should know of their rights and legal protection available to them in times of need. The State government has done a lot for the uplift of women and specifically those from the downtrodden sections of society. Recalling the contribution of Periyar E.V. His role in women’s emancipation has left an indelible mark in several spheres such as education, job opportunities and administration. Claiming that women were enslaved on the day of their marriage Mrs. Ramathaal called for an end to the ordeal of women perpetrated in the name of astrology and horoscope caused by superstition. “Still there were incidents of female infanticide and we have to definitely put an end to the menace,” she said. Emphasising the importance of education Mrs. Ramathaal said that women should acquire life skills and put them to their best use. Education should be provided to all girl children up to the age of 14 by the least. There should be a situation wherein no girl child should be left unlettered, she observed. Buying and acquiring property was the right of women and none should be allowed to interfere in that activity. Legally it was not permitted as well, she pointed out adding that the State Women’s Commission was rendering a lot of service to the women in need and distress. District Collector J. Umamaheswari pointed out that women’s rights was in fact human rights and they were inalienable. There were situations when rights were still being denied to women and children. That situation should change for the good of society. In particular women were being denied their due even psychologically. Men and women should consider themselves equal and efficient enough. Women should believe in themselves and keep their morale high to achieve progress, Dr. Umamaheswari observed. Rights should not be denied in the garb of caste, religion, social denomination or economic disparity. Everyone should protect and preserve the rights of others and that would be the means to achieve a peaceful co-existence and mutual development, she added. Member of the State Women’s Commission Sangamitrai, District Panchayat Chairperson Poovai Ramesh Babu, Chairperson of the Karur Municipality P. Sivakamasundari, Udayam Trust Director G.
