Vijaya Bank wins

Vijaya Bank annexed the State Association Cup basketball title yet again with a facile 85-72 win over ASC.

Vijaya Bank, the undisputed champion in the State after having claimed the ‘A’ division league title as well earlier, proved distinctly superior to ASC to record its third straight win in the semifinal league.

At the mini-stadium in Kolar late on Thursday, Vijaya Bank maintained a steady pace with the speedy Ronnie causing a flutter in the ASC defence. With the tall Sanjay Raj and Roshan too providing the needed impetus, it was the bankmen who led throughout after enjoying a 28-11 first-quarter lead.

ASC did come into the game and despite switching sides at 44-31, Vijaya Bank lost the services of international Raj in the third quarter, with five fouls, and with it the momentum.

ASC did narrow down the deficit to five points (65-70) with Nixon spearheading the revival. But the bankmen had it in them to cruise along for a comfortable victory.

The scores: Final league match: Vijaya Bank 85 (Ronnie 17, Roshan 14) bt ASC 72 (Nixon 21, Vellappan 12).
