KOLKATA: A superb unbeaten 92 by Abhishek Raut and his 111-run partnership with Shoaib Sheikh (65) for the third wicket enabled Mumbai to end the first day of the four-day Col. C.K. Nayudu Trophy under-22 semifinal at a healthy 247 for four against Bengal at the Eden Gardens here on Friday. Put into bat, the two negotiated the Bengal attack with a measure of confidence and ensured the vital association in 141 minutes off 224 balls. Raut played 164 balls and hit 13 fours and one six while Sheikh faced 201 balls in which he had six boundaries and two sixes. Bengal mediumpacer Mohammed Ashrafuddin picked up three wickets for 73 runs. At the Jadavpur University second campus, Punjab was reduced to 67 for two after batting first. Taruwar Kohli (82), an under-19 World Cup winning team member, and Gurkeerat Singh (57) added 122 runs for the third wicket to steady the team’s first innings. At close, Punjab was 208 for five in 88.1 overs. The scores: Mumbai 1st innings 247 for four in 90 overs (Abhishek Raut 92 batting, Shoaib Sheikh 65; Md. Ashrafuddin three for 73) vs Bengal .
