Thrissur, Alappuzha hoopsters triumph

CHALAKUDY: K.K. Bharathan fired in three goals as host Thrissur blanked Thiruvananthapuram 7-0 to win the under-17 boys’ football title at the Carmel Stadium, here on Friday.

Leo Jose netted two, while Jijo Joseph and Akhiljith scored one each in the host’s big party.

Joy for Thrissur

There was joy for the host in girls basketball too with Thrissur, with its big stars coming from Little Flower School (Koratty), crushing Kozhikode 44-26 in the final.

Indian youth camper, six-footer Anu Thomas, who impressed with her rebound skills under the offensive and defensive boards, Delphy Nixon, the younger sister of junior international Stephy Nixon, and captain and ball-handler Teresa Thomas played a big role in the victory.

Thrissur’s last success in girls’ basketball came four years ago. Kottayam, the winner the last four years with the Mount Carmel School being the big reason for the success, surprisingly lost to Kozhikode in the semifinals.

Alappuzha emerged champion in boys’ basketball, defeating Thiruvananthapuram 51-37, while Palakkad defeated Thrissur 5-0 to lift the boys’ hockey trophy.
