Go by Statewide seniority list: forum

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The State government should fill the 7,000 secondary grade teacher vacancies in Tamil Nadu by adopting the Statewide seniority list rather than the districtwise seniority in each district employment exchange, the Nadar Mahajana Sangam has said.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, its general secretary G. Karikolraj said that the Supreme Court had, in October, declined to stay a Madras High Court judgment striking down a G.O. by which the vacancies were sought to be filled district-wise through seniority of candidates in each district employment exchange. The Supreme Court had also stipulated that those appointed cannot seek transfer to another school outside the district, he said. While the vacancies for teachers in the fields of engineering, medicine, and B.Ed., were being filled through State-wide seniority list, he said, for the posts of secondary grade alone, a different yardstick was being adopted.

Mr. Karikolraj said that many people in the northern districts, who had registered in 2000, had obtained jobs. However, many in the southern districts, who had registered as early as 1987, were yet to get jobs, he claimed. The Government should set right this disparity and implement the Supreme Court’s order.
