CHENNAI: A garbage transfer station each is being constructed in four zones at a total cost of Rs.7.83 crore by the Chennai Corporation to facilitate efficient garbage disposal, Mayor M. Subramanian said here on Thursday. The transit stations for Basin Bridge zone (Zone 2) and Ayanavaram zone (Zone 4) will be constructed at Rs.1.62 crore and Rs.1.94 crore respectively. Kilpauk zone (Zone 5) will have its transit station in Pulianthope and it would be built at the cost of Rs. 2.95 crore. The Nungambakkam zone (Zone 7) transit station will be developed at the cost of Rs.1.32 crore. Distributing utility vehicles at the Corporation vehicle depot at Basin Bridge, Mr. Subramanian said two vehicles fitted with grapplers had been purchased at the cost of Rs.1.13 crore to clear large amounts of garbage and would be used in the transfer stations. The Corporation has already obtained 77 compactor trucks for garbage collection in the city. A mini-loader vehicle, which would help in efficient removal of debris from narrow streets, has also been obtained at the cost of Rs.12.1 lakh. It would be provided to all the Corporation zones depending on its efficiency. The Corporation would also purchase 22 haulage trucks worth Rs.4.74 crore to carry more loads of garbage. The vehicles procured would help in quick transportation of garbage, he said. Five vehicles worth Rs. 25 lakh were also given to the Corporation zonal officials to be used during review work. Two more vehicles were procured at a total cost of Rs.52 lakh to be used during the drive to catch stray dogs. Mr.Subramanian added that the amount for an employee to catch a dog has been increased from Rs.10 to Rs. 25. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said the sophisticated machines would help in quicker garbage disposal and would ease traffic congestion near the transfer stations, as otherwise lorries queue up waiting for their turn to dispose of collected waste. Deputy Mayor R.Sathyabama, Corporation Council opposition floor leader P. Ravi, Zone 2 chairman V.Shanmugasundaram and several Corporation officials participated in the function.
