Directive to remove hoardings

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Public parks and statues in the city are “disappearing” under a blitz of advertisements by political parties, mass organisations and even government agencies.

The sea of advertisements in the form of flex boards, hoardings and arches block the view of traffic islands and parks and mar the beauty of heritage buildings and landmark monuments that characterise the cityscape.

At the Asan Square in front of the University Senate Hall, the statue of Kumaranasan and the greenery of the surrounding park have been virtually shut out by a collage of advertisements.

The defacing collection also obstructs the view of the stately clock tower on the university office premises.

Faced with mounting public pressure to control the menace, Mayor C. Jayan Babu on Thursday called for removing the advertisements that mar the beauty of the city.

The Mayor has directed political parties, cultural and service organisations and other agencies to remove the boards and arches installed in parks and gardens within five days at their own expense.
