OMWU activists stage dharna

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: The activists of the MKCG medical college unit of the Orissa Medical Workers’ Union (OMWU) started indefinite dharna in the medical college campus from Thursday. They demanded retrenched employees to be reinstated.

The secretary of the union, Sukanta Mukhi said they had to resort to this agitation as the State Health Department has not kept its assurance to reinstate 60 sanitary workers who had been removed from their jobs by the MKCG medical college authorities in the past. In August these employees had called off their proposed cease work agitation over the same demand following promises from the Health Department. They want the temporary employees who were removed in 2001 to be appointed again. Only three of these retrenched employees were reappointed in 2003 but the rest 60 have not been taken in. The other demands of the union include discontinuation of privatisation of sanitary work of the medical college hospital, as according to the union it would affect the livelihood of sanitary workers employed in the medical college till now. The union has demanded filling up of all vacancies of sanitary workers in the medical college and its hospital.
