State School Games from today

CHALAKUDY: Almost every talent from Kerala hitting the headlines in the National circuit over the last few decades has first been spotted at the State School Games.

The 52nd edition of the School Games, which attracts over 5,000 boys and girls from all the 14 districts of Kerala, begins at seven venues here on Friday.

The event is spread over six days with competitions in team events being held over the first three days and athletics taking over after that at the Carmel Stadium, the main venue.

Competitions will be held in the under-17 and under-19 sections in the team events.

Thrissur won the overall championship in the team events in Kottayam last year, ending Thiruvananthapuram’s five-year reign.

BJM wins title

BJM Government College (Chavara), with 19 points, won the overall title in the Kerala University inter-collegiate weightlifting championship at the University Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.

MG College Thiruvananthapuram finished second with 12 points followed by College of Engineering with nine points.

In powerlifting, SD College (Alappuzha) took the top honours with 10 points. SN College (Cherthala) and BJM College (Chavara) shared the second spot with nine points each. K. Aneesh (St. Gregorios College, Kottarakkara) was declared as the Mr. Kerala University in the best physique event.

The results (winners only): Weightlifting: 56kg: G. Kiran (Uty College, Tvm); 62kg: V. Vimal Kumar (BJM, Chavara); 69kg: A.U. Arun (Mar Ivanios College, Tvm); 77kg: N. Nishad (BJM, Chavara); 85kg: P.S. Rajeev (MG College, Tvm); 94kg: T.K. Abin (College of Eng, Tvm); 105kg: Arun Basil Mathew (Medical College, Tvm).

Team championship: 1. BJM College, Chavara (19 points); 2. MG College, Tvm (12 pts), 3. College of Engineering, Tvm (9 points).

Powerlifting: 56kg: M.S. Vishu (BJM, Chavara); 60kg: Antony Lawrence (SD College, Alp); 67.5 kg: A.U. Arun (Mar Ivanios College, Tvm); 75kg: P.S. Rajeev (MG College, Tvm); 82.5kg: Ayoslal (SN College, Klm); 90kg; R. Karthik (SD College, Alp); 100kg: J. Jerome (UIT, Alp); 110kg: V. Jayakrishnan (SN College, Cherthala).

Team championship: 1. SD College, Alappuzha (10 pts), 2. SNC, Cherthala & BJM College Chavara (9 each).

Best Physique: 60kg: T.M. Vijesh (VTMNSS, Dhanavachapuram); 65kg: S.L. Sreejith (Uty College, Tvm); 70kg: K. Aneesh (SG College, Kottarakkara); 80kg: S.J. Sarath Kumar (Mary Matha College); 85kg: K.T. Mohammed Asif (COE, Tvm); 90kg: B.R. Shiju (SNC, Klm), over 90kg: Sarath Vijayan (MG College, Tvm).

Mr. Kerala University: K. Aneesh (St. Gregorios College, Kottarakkara).

MA College in final

Mar Athanasius College (Kothamangalam) will meet Baselius (Kottayam) in the final of the Mar Thoma Trophy all-Kerala inter-collegiate football tournament at the Mar Thoma College Ground at Thiruvalla on Friday evening.

Mar Athanasius defeated Catholicate (Pathanamthitta) 5-3, via the tie-breaker. The teams were level 1-1 at the end of the regulation period. Baselius also posted a tie-breaker win, beating St. Xavier’s (Thumba) 4-2.

Kollam men win

Kollam men and Kannur women emerged champions in the State senior volleyball championships in Nadapuram. In the finals, Kollam beat Ernakulam 23-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-11, while Kannur defeated Kottayam 14-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-10.
