Did U.S. get it wrong?

This refers to the article “Why the United States got it wrong (Op-Ed, Dec.11). After 9/11, the declaration of war on terror by the U.S. did cost it dear. While America fell into a war trap, India has done considerably well by exposing Pakistan’s aid to terrorism and mobilising international pressure on Pakistan to curb the same. The U.N. ban on the Jamat-ud-Dawah proves India’s victory over terrorism.

Ripul Kumar,

Delhi

Washington’s response to 9/11 cannot and should not be emulated by India as the consequences of it are for all of us to see and judge. The war in Iraq does not seem to end and Afghanistan seems to be in a much worse position than before the U.S. military intervention there. Any knee-jerk reaction can only result in more headaches for India. Waging a war will only aggravate the tensions between the two countries. A stable, democratic Pakistan is much easier to deal with than one under dictatorship. In these times of global economic meltdown, are we ready for another war?

Velayutham S,

Chennai

Instead of taking the easy route of war, Indian polity must devise a strong anti-terrorism framework that identifies the perils associated with each action taken to combat the growing threat. India is a country that has ages of experience in defeating foreign threats. We can gain more insights from our own history than from the mistakes of the U.S.

Shahnaz Mohamed Thahir,

Edappally
