Welfare fund to cover shop workers under ESI, EPF

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan on Thursday said in the Assembly that workers in shops and commercial establishments enjoying ESI and EPF benefits would be covered by the Kerala Shop and Commercial Establishments Workers’ Welfare Fund.

The Minister was replying to a debate on the Kerala Shop and Commercial Establishments Workers’ Welfare Fund (Amendment) Bill as referred by the Subject Committee. The Bill sought to amend the original Act relating to the definition of worker in shops and establishments and bring in more clarity in the membership of the welfare fund.

The Bill was unanimously passed by the Assembly.
