Tirupur: To promote demand-driven approach for horticulture/agriculture products and enhance farmers’ income, the Department of Horticulture will facilitate establishment of hi-tech poly greenhouses for the first time in Tirupur block this fiscal. The structures will enable the farmers to adopt ‘protected cultivation’ practices for production of various cash crops. P. Santhanakrishnan, Assistant Director of Horticulture, told The Hindu that as part of the project, the department would extend financial assistance in the form of subsidies to help the farmers set up the hi-tech poly greenhouses. “We will subsidise the construction cost of the greenhouses to the tune of 50 per cent in the case of small and marginal farmers and 33 per cent for other farmers, subjected to a maximum unit cost of Rs. 6.5 lakh, from the corpus created under the head of National Horticulture Mission,” he said. Select cropsAt the beginning, the subsidy assistance will be offered to farmers who are interested in ‘protected cultivation’ of three flower species (gerbera, coronation and rose) and two vegetables (tomato and capsicum). “Among capsicum (popularly known as ‘kudai milagai’), less pungent varieties like ‘bell pepper’ and ‘sweet pepper’ used in the preparation of salads will be encouraged,” Mr. Santhanakrishnan said. According to him, the dome-shaped greenhouses with high quality polythene covering will check the intensity of harmful ultraviolet rays on plants during sunny days. The foggers inside the greenhouses will help the cultivators maintain optimum temperature (20 to 28 degree Celsius) and humidity levels required for healthy growing of the crops. Income“Since the structure is fully covered, crops will be free from pest attacks and damages owing to unfriendly climatic conditions thereby enhance the income of farmers multi-fold,” Mr. Santhanakrishnan pointed out.
