100 kg of adulterated dust tea seized

Huge haul: Corporation officials seizing adulterated dust tea from a house in Tirupur on Thursday.
Tirupur: The Corporation health department officials seized 100 kg of adulterated dust tea (tea powder) from a house here on Thursday.
Official sources said that the team comprising City Health Officer K.R. Jawaharlal, Food Inspector Ramasamy and seven Sanitary Inspectors raided the house at a residential complex on the fifth street of S. V. Colony along P.N. Road following a tip-off.
Apart from the dust tea found concealed in gunny bags and fabrics woven from flax, the team had also recovered colorants and fake consumer packs of reputed brand names.
The wholesaler, who was running the packaging unit, escaped as soon as the squad reached the premises.
Sources said that the samples of dust tea recovered from the house would be sent for scientific tests at recognised laboratories to evaluate the exact percentage of contamination. The house was subsequently sealed.
An investigation was launched into the incident under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954.
Special teams
Mr. Jawaharlal told The Hindu that four special squads would be constituted soon to intensify checks to prevent the sale of food materials which passed their expiry dates and adulterated edible items.
Each squad would comprise a food inspector, a sanitary inspector and a sanitary supervisor.
