Notorious criminal arrested

CHENNAI: The Crime Branch CID police on Thursday arrested Kumar alias Left Kumar alias Jeya Kumar (30) of Sirkali who was accused in a heinous crime involving rape and murder in 2002.

According to an official release, Kumar went to a house where he had worked as a mason on the Manonmani Nagar in Sirkali on October 4, 2002, on the pretext of taking some of his objects.

Three minor children, including two girls were in the house at that time. After tying up two children, he raped one girl.

While leaving, the accused slit the throats of the children in an attempt to murder them and took away some jewels. While the boy succumbed to the injury on the spot, the two girls survived.

Based on a specific complaint from the victim, police registered a case that was later transferred to the CBCID. Based on a specific input that Kumar had come to Sirkali on Thursday, a special team arrested him at the bus stand there.

Jewels worth Rs, 20,000 were recovered from him, the release added.
