Navy ready to meet expectations of decision makers: Vice-Admiral

Special Correspondent

RAMESWARAM: The Indian Navy will meet the expectations of the decision makers in response to the reported heightened activities of its Pakistani counterpart, said Vice-Admiral N.K. Verma, Flag Officer Commanding-in Chief, Eastern Naval Command.

Asked about the preparedness of the Indian Navy following reports of mobilisation of its assets by Pakistan Navy in the aftermath of Mumbai terror attacks, he said, “On these matters, the highest level political leadership has made some statements. I don’t think I can add anything more to what is being said at the highest level. But it can be assured that whatever is expected of mine [Indian Navy], it is going to be done.” Mr. Verma was here on Thursday to take stock of the security situation in Palk Strait and Palk Bay. Accompanied by Commodore Phillip Van Haltren, Naval Officer-in Charge, Tamil Nadu, Commander S.R. Shinde, Area Commander and top level officers, he inspected the International Maritime Boundary Line through a naval ship.

Asked whether the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was posing threat to India, the Vice Admiral replied in negative. However, he said, the Navy was of the view that the Southern approaches should be brought under more surveillance. Hence, it had been decided to consolidate aviation facilities at the Naval Air Station in Uchipuli. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) would also be operated from it. It was upgraded as a full-fledged air station. It would be commissioned within a few months.

He said high powered vessels and long duration aircraft were being operated from Chennai and Arakkonam respectively. The sorties of shorter range Dornier would be increased after commissioning the air station.

Asked whether LTTE cadres had landed at Dhanuskodi or not through 7 Sri Lankan boats, which were found abandoned recently and later seized by security agencies, Mr. Verma said, “Any event like this, we don’t dismiss it easily. It has been taken with utmost seriousness. No boat had engines in it. The security agencies are carrying out detailed investigation. The cyclone, which passed through the area, could be one of the reasons for it. However, the intelligence and security agencies are collecting inputs from various angles.”

He said he held discussion with senior officials of the State government in Chennai on Thursday on the need to enhance coastal security following Mumbai terror attacks. He had mooted the idea of using fishermen as main sources of getting information such as intruder and stranger boats.
