Police action sparks protest

Pollachi: Attempts by the sleuths of the Food Cell CID to secure a person early morning on Thursday sparked protest from people here. Sub-Inspector Muthupandi, police personnel Ravi and Amirthalingam followed Srinivasan (67) while he was having a morning walk near Mahalingapuram. The cotton merchant resisted police attempts and raised an alarm. When people gathered in strength they gave their identity and said they had come to pick up a person involved in smuggling of rice and other essential commodities. Later, it was found that they had by mistakenly tried to secure Srinivasan. They were handed over to the Pollachi police. People staged a demonstration near Pollachi bus stand in protest agaisnt the action. Srinivasan has been admitted to a hospital.
