Unitary status for Khallikote College sought

BERHAMPUR: The South Orissa Students’ Association (SOSA) has demanded the State government to grant unitary university status to Khallikote autonomous college in the city.

The association had sent a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik . It may be noted that this premier institution of the State has a history of over 150 years. It was started as a High School in 1856. In 1878 its patron, the royal family of Khallikote, transformed it into a full-fledged college.

Several dignitaries including former President of India V.V. Giri, who hailed from the city, had studied in this university.

The students association feel that it is high time for the State government to grant unitary university status to the institution to facilitate its expansion and development. They said that the development of the institution would only be possible if the institution would have a new campus on the outskirts of the city.
