Thousands of devotees witness Karthigai deepam

PALANI: Thousands of devotees witnessed lighting of Karthigai deepam at Sri Dhandayuthapaniswamy hill temple on Thursday evening.

At the outset, Shanmugarchanai and Shanmugar Deeparadhana were performed. After Vishwaruba dharshan, sayaratcha puja was performed.

Meanwhile, Lord Chinnakumarar ascended on well-decorated golden peacock mount. The temple gurukkals lit oil deepam on four corners of the hill. At dusk, Thiru Karthigai deepam was lit on 30-foot high Deepasthambam before main mandapam of the hill temple. Later, ‘Sokkapanai’ was burnt.

Following this, Thiru Karthigai deepam was lit at Thiru Avinankudi temple and at Sri Perianayaki Amman temple in the temple. Devotees started thronging the temple since after noon.

To control the crowd on the hill temple, rope car and winch operation was temporarily suspended for some time at ground stations. Security tightened on the hill temple and at Sri Padhavinayagar temple.

The seven-day festival had commenced with Kaapu kattu festival on December 5.

With rapid increase arrival of pilgrims, particularly Sabarimala devotees, sale of panchamritham has gone up manifold in the past 10 days, according to temple officials.

Karthigai Deepam festival was celebrated at Sri Subramaniaswamy temple at Thirumalaikeni near Sengulam and Sri Abirami Amman and Sri Kalatheeswarar temple in Dindigul.
