Stanley scores the winner

CHENNAI: Arrows’ Nigerian import Stanley scored a stunning, decisive long-ranger against defending champion Indian Bank in the St. Joseph’s-CFA senior division league here on Tuesday. Stanley’s vicious right-footer from 40 yards curled into the net after Arrows was awarded a free-kick in the 35th minute. This was the only goal scored in the match.

Though Indian Bank dominated most of the fixture, it was an outing of missed opportunities for the side.

Despite dominating ball possession and constructing several approaches to the opposition’s goal, it failed to finish well.

In the 29th minute, Elamurugan had the vacant Arrows’ goal in his sights but failed to drive home from barely 10 yards. On numerous occasions, Arrows’ goalkeeper Kandasamy ventured out of his domain to thwart an Indian Bank attack.

The second half began with Indian Bank searching desperately for an equaliser. It created a flurry of chances early on: Gunasekar’s weak header was tipped over the bar by an alert Kandasamy and Nirmal Kumar shot wide when he had just the goalkeeper to beat.

The only occasion on which Indian bank managed to find the net was an ‘offside’ goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Meanwhile, Reserve Bank of India beat Chennai Soccer 2-0 in the first division league. C. Kannan and J. Fernando scored.
