BANGALORE: “Ideally, all urban transport entities should be brought under the Urban Development Department (UDD) if not under Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP),” said Upendra Tripathy, Principal Secretary (Home and Transport), who earlier had been Managing Director of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). Mr. Tripathy said that BBMP should be made the umbrella agency coordinating and regulating all kinds of urban transport — private as well as public — and be given autonomous status for its independent functioning. Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao said the Government was keen on strengthening the body by making it a statutory body and bringing in all stakeholders with regard to urban mobility under one roof. Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) Commissioner and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Managing Director Gaurav Gupta said a lot of ground had to be covered in Bangalore, though Karnataka was the first State to have Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority. The image of Bangalore as a city offering seamless mobility has to be built first through statutory backing and technical expertise, he felt. No amount of road-widening or flyover construction will help ease traffic and the only way is by regulating private vehicles, he added Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) Managing Director N. Sivasailam said BMRCL was already a part of BMLTA. BMRCL shares a common policy with BMTC and KSRTC for inter-modal traffic integration at various places in the city. As and when Namma Metro becomes operational, common ticketing system will be in place, he added. BBMP Commissioner S. Subramanya said initially there is a need for a single agency to coordinate functioning of transport undertakings, including the Metro. On having an umbrella agency to regulate and coordinate all aspects of transport, right from road building to operation of buses/ trains, Mr. Subramanya said those things will have to come gradually.
