‘Bad labour practice one of the causes of terror attack’
Special Correspondent
Bangalore: The refusal of the of five-star managements to put in place a “responsible” labour hiring practice should be acknowledged as one of the reasons why militants could walk freely into the Taj and Oberoi hotels in Mumbai and unleash terror, the Hotel Employees Federation of India has said.
Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, G.R. Shivashankar, president of the federation, said that five-star hotels were hiring contract workers without proper verification process in order to evade labour laws that give statutory benefits to workers. “This puts the safety of the workers and the guests at risk,” he said.
He said that about 75 per cent of workers in five-star hotels are on contract or are outsourced employees who are paid low salary. The managements in many cases do not have any documents on their workforce, including their addresses, he said.
The federation has demanded the setting up of a national commission to monitor labour practices in five-star hotels, so that welfare of workers as well as the safety of guests is not compromised.
