Chennai: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will inaugurate the flyover on the G.N. Chetty Road–Thirumalai Pillai Road junction at T. Nagar on December 29.

Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin made the announcement after inspecting the final stages of the construction on Tuesday. He said the flyover, costing Rs.16.5 crore, would ease congestion at the busy junction and benefit the surrounding localities including T. Nagar, Thousand Lights, Teynampet and Nungambakkam.

The flyover, which will allow two-way traffic, is 505 metres long and 15 metres wide.

It is supported by 24 pillars. Mr. Stalin directed Corporation officials to ensure that adequate footpath space is provided along service lanes under the flyover.

The Minister said the elevated bridge to replace the Alandur causeway, the vehicular subway near Stanley Government Hospital and the Jones Road subway would be ready by May next.

The Rangarajapuram road overbridge, estimated to cost Rs. 15.75 crore, and the Perambur flyover, estimated to cost Rs. 51 crore, would be completed in December next.

Projects such as the Kathivakkam road overbridge (Rs. 12.20 crore), the Villivakkam road under bridge (Rs. 13.40 crore) and the Korukkupet road under bridge (Rs. 6.28 crore) were in various stages of progress.

Mr. Stalin told reporters that the flooding in the city during the recent rain was due to water overflowing from Puzhal, Chembarambakkam and Porur tanks. This factor had been taken into consideration in a comprehensive plan for flood alleviation in the city.

The proposal, with an outlay of Rs. 1,538 crore, was submitted to the Centre for assistance under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, he said.
