Sini Jose breaks 400m record

KOCHI: With many bright young girls staking their claim for berths in the National mile relay team, life is getting tougher for Olympian Sini Jose.

Fully aware of the scene around her, the 21-year-old from Alphonsa College, Pala, broke the seven-year-old 400m meet record on the opening day of the 26th Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate athletics championship at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Tuesday evening. “I had some rest after the Olympics, a small injury too, now I’m slowly coming back to form,” said Sini.

Sithara’s splendid show

While Sini scorched the track, her collegemate and all-India varsity champion Sithara T. Illath soared to a new high new in women’s pole vault. Sithara went past her own all-India varsity record (3.23m) with a 3.35 effort.

Earlier, the Mahatma Gandhi University Vice-Chancellor Rajan Gurukkal, inaugurated the two-day event. He also released the logo of the all-India varsity athletics championship which MGU will host in Kochi from December 20 to 24.
