Jr. National badminton championship from today

SIVAKASI: The 33rd junior National badminton championship begins at the A.J. Stadium here on Wednesday. The tournament, organised by Virudhunagar District Badminton Association, will see participation of more than 350 players from 29 states.

The inter-State championship will be held on December 10 and 11, while the individual events begin on December 12.

In the boys’ section, B. Sumeeth Reddy (Andhra Pradesh) is the top seed, followed by K. Nanda Gopal (Andhra Pradesh) and Aditya Prakash (Karnataka).

In the girls’ category, Anuradha Shirkhande (Air India), N. Sikki Reddy (Andhra Pradesh) and P.C. Thulasi (Kerala) are the top three seeds in that order.

Anil Singh of Rajasthan is the referee and Mohammed Ali of Tamil Nadu will be the deputy referee.

Prakash shines

A fine all-round performance by Prakash (110 & four for 12, including a hat-trick) enabled New Star Cricket Club score a 146-run win over ‘A’ Classic Cricket Club in the NDCA-Sterling Biotech HPF Rolling Trophy cricket tournament in Udhagamandalam on Monday.

New Star Cricket Club posted 262 and bundled out the opposition for 116.

The scores: New Star CC 262 (Prakash 110) bt ‘A’ Classic CC 116 (Prakash four for 12, including hat-trick), Fern Hill YSC 188 (V. Gopalakrishnan 50) lost to Gudalur CC 191 for seven in 39.1 overs (Joji 85).

Riders SC posts win

Riders Sports Club notched up a 3-2 win over Vigneswara Sports Club in the NDFA-Riverside Public School third division league at the HADP Stadium in Udhagamandalam on Tuesday. Earlier, Sporting Union scored a 4-1 win over Rallis Recreation Club.

Unbeaten 130 by Gopi

P. Gopi struck an unbeaten century as Jahir CC defeated Majestic CC by 67 runs in a Dindigul DCA first division league cricket match in Dindigul.

The scores: First division: Jahir CC 259 for five in 40 overs (P. Gopi 130 n.o.) bt Majestic CC 192 in 35.5 overs (M. Senthil Pandi 51).

Second division: Playboys CC 134 for six in 20 overs (M. Venkatesh 45 n.o.) lost to Eleven Star CC 136 for eight in 19.2 overs (A. Palanisamy 54 n.o.); Yuvaraj CC 139 for eight in 24 overs (M. Senthil Velavan 48) bt Mansur CC 129 in 23 overs.

Third division: Warriors CC 97 for nine in 20 overs lost to Lagon CC 98 for eight in 19.2 overs (R. Saravanan 40 n.o., Baskar five for 20).
