Ban on incandescent bulbs

Brussels: The European Union will ban the sale of incandescent light bulbs from 2009, as part of an energy saving plan, EU sources said.

According to current Chair of the EU Energy Ministers Council, French Jean-Louis Borloo, the objective is to gradually replace the market by fluorescent energy-saving bulbs.

The measure, already applied in other parts of the world, will be gradually implemented from the second half of next year.

The energy-saving bulbs are more expensive but last 10 times longer; therefore, the EU would save between 7.70 billion euros and 12.40 billion euros by less energy consumption. — Prensa Latina
