Court rejects plea for CBI probe into Jamia encounter
J. Venkatesan
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has rejected at the admission stage a public interest litigation petition seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the Jamia Nagar shootout here in the Capital on September 19.
The petitioner, `Real Cause’, alleged that it was a fake encounter and only an independent probe would bring out the truth.
Witness to encounter
The NGO, who appeared in person, submitted that he was a witness to the shooting incident and he was certain that it was a fake encounter.
Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, sitting with Justice P. Sathasivam, told the petitioner, “If you are a witness, why don’t you go to the police and give your version?”
The petitioner replied that the police refused to take his version.
Dummy
The Chief Justice then said, “We really suspect that you have been put up by somebody else. We can verify your credentials. We can’t entertain such petitions.”
The Bench then dismissed the petition.
