KOZHIKODE: The Green Hope Society, a task force for environment conservation, has lauded the steps initiated by the Corporation and the supermarkets to restrict the use of polythene disposable carry bags. Secretary of the Green Hope Society K. Shaju, while commending the Corporation for directing supermarkets to charge one rupee from the consumer for a plastic cover said the step would encourage the general public to bring their own carry bags. Such measures would go a long way in reducing the use of polythene covers and thereby prevent degradation of the environment. He appealed to the trading community to impose the rule in all types of sale outlets. Cart vendors, hawkers, and meat and fish sellers too must set a similar example. This would lead to the practice of people carrying cloth and jute bags during shopping. It would be the beginning of the total elimination of disposable plastic wastes from the State, it was pointed out.
