“Lok Sabha polls in April-May”

Special Correspondent

New Delhi: Lok Sabha elections are likely to be held between mid-April and mid-May next year and there is no “particular interest” in advancing them “unless there is an absolutely great need for that,” Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami has said.

The statement reflects the understanding of the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commission has not taken any formal decision on this matter.

Mr. Gopalaswami was expressing his opinion to a television channel when he was asked when the Lok Sabha polls would be held.

The CEC said: “As a convention, the elections are held just before the government’s term ends. Elections will take place in the normal course when it is due.”
