Arvind Aaron

CHENNAI: Chennai’s Navin Kanna shocked third seed International Master Deep Sengupta of Kolkata in the second round of the Sri Sai Ram Engineering Asian junior chess championships here on Sunday.

Navin is among the 12 leaders on full two points.

The leaders include World under-16 champion and second seed B. Adhiban of Chennai and World under-14 champion Vidit Gujrathi of Nasik.

Playing black, Navin seized the advantage right from the Caro-Kann opening and by move 18 was in command. Deep, who never got a chance to get back, gave up after 46 moves.

Guntur’s Purushothaman sacrificed his queen to obtain a 35-move draw against Chennai’s top seed Sethuraman.

Defending champion P. Karthikeyan hunted down the king of P. Saravanakrishnan before making it run.

Sagar Shah played well to get a big advantage against IM Shyam Sundar but a blunder on move 37 cost him a rook and the game.

In the girls’ section, defending champion, Woman Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes wriggled out of a losing ending to draw with P. Sivasankari of Chennai in 79 moves.

Six players, including top seed Kruttika Nadig of Pune, are in lead with full two points.

Kruttika won a pawn via a pin on the king and then added another pawn to her kitty with a rook penetration.

Chennai’s Mohana Priya, who went for the Catalan opening as white, lost the knight ending in 37 moves.
