ONGC wins team championship

CHENNAI: ONGC won the team championship of the XXIX PSPB inter-unit athletic meet, organised by CPCL at the Nehru Stadium here on Friday.

The four-day meet concluded with ONGC bagging 16 gold, 22 silver and 12 bronze medals, followed by IOC with 15 gold, six silver and four bronze medals. The third place went to OIL with three silver and 10 bronze medals.

T. Radhakrishnan, Inspector General of Police (Training), distributed the prizes. K.K. Acharya, Managing Director, CPCL, presided. W.I. Davaram, President, Tamil Nadu Athletic Association, was also present.

The results (winners only): Long jump: Veterans: P.N. Dutta (ONGC) 5.33m; Men: 800m: Ghamanda Ram (ONGC) 1:57.1sec; 200m: Dharambir (IOC) 21:9sec; Javelin: Diganta Bonran (ONGC) 64.74m; 100m: Sandeep Sarkaria (ONGC) 10.9s; 4x100m relay: IOC 43.5s; 4x400m relay: IOC 3.25.28s.

Sania feted

Indian tennis player Sania Mirza was conferred an honorary doctorate by MGR University at its convocation here on Saturday.

However, Sania, who is attending an off-season camp in Bangalore, was unable to attend the function. Apologising for her absence in a recorded video message, Sania said: “I am honoured at receiving the doctorate and am sorry that I was not able to collect it personally.”

Two-all draw

TN Postal and AG Friends played out a 2-2 draw in a CHA first division hockey match here on Friday.

The result: TN Postal 2 (Rajan, Muthu Balaraman) drew with AG Friends 2 (Murugavel, Manivannan).

Award ceremony

The thirteenth award ceremony to honour physical directors by Dr. Navaraj Chelliah Trust will be held at the Connemara Public Library Hall on December 27.

The awards will be presented to PD and PEs who have prepared teams that won the district, state, national and international level tournaments in the last five years.
