Lakshmi, Secretary, Meenakshi College for Women, who inaugurated the December music festival of Kala Kruthi here on Friday. Though she loved music, it was unfortunate that she was not able to learn music. It was to ensure that her students imbibed music that the Meenakshi Sundararajan Fine Arts Academy was set up, she said. Dr. Lakshmi, who is also the Lions District Governor (District 324 A-1), presented the Kala Kruthi awards to three women vocalists, N.C. Soundaravalli, Suguna Varadachari, and Suguna Purushothaman. The awards included a medal and a shawl. Kala Kruthi, an all-women venture, was begun in 1995 with the aim of encouraging women artists to perform, said Rajamma Venugopal, secretary. Among its patrons are D.K. Pattammal and Devaki Santhanam. President Shanthi Raghavan said vocalists will perform on all seven days of the festival.
