Tirupur: Frequent complaints of Udumalpet residents on sewage water finding its way into storm water drains and polluting underground water table posing environmental hazards will, hopefully, come to an end soon. Udumalpet town, which is to become a part of the proposed Tirupur district, will have its first underground sewerage system at a revised project outlay of Rs 41.44 crore for scientific collection, treatment and disposal of sewage generated in the town. Municipal Chairman C. Velusamy told The Hindu that the work was expected to commence within a month. “The project will be commissioned in 18 months from the date of commencement of work,” Mr. Velusamy added. Of the total outlay, 80 per cent will be obtained as grants from the corpus created under the Centre-sponsored Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium towns while the remaining portion will be shared equally by the state government and the municipal administration. The sewer lines, totalling 111.4 km, will be designed to cater to a projected population of 79,200 in 2039, calculated using Geometrical Increase (GI) method. Under the scheme, sewers, sewer appurtenances, 4,132 manholes, pumping stations and a sewage treatment plant will be established. Sewage from all areas except that falling under Ward No. 29 and No. 33 (partly) will be gravitated to the receiving sump planned near the sewage treatment plant at Senjerimalai road. Wastes from other areas will be collected at a manhole and subsequently pulled up using a lifting station to be constructed at Karunanidhi Colony. The sewage treatment plant has been designed to treat seven million litres of waste water and excrement a day using fluidized aerobic bioreactor technology.
