New formation: CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat calls on AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa at her residence in Chennai on Friday.

CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have decided to enter into an alliance in Tamil Nadu for the Lok Sabha elections. An agreement was reached during a meeting between CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa here on Friday.

“Mr. Prakash Karat and I had a very cordial discussion and it has been decided that the AIADMK and the CPI(M) will enter into an alliance,” Ms. Jayalalithaa told reporters at her Poes Garden residence after a luncheon meeting with the CPI(M) leader.

“I am very happy with the outcome of the meeting,” she added.

Mr. Karat, with Ms. Jayalalithaa by his side, said he had met her to discuss how the two parties could work together and forge a common understanding. “We had a good discussion and will meet again to work out the modalities of how we can establish an alliance,” he explained. A two-day State committee meeting of the party had decided to work with the AIADMK, after debating the Polit Bureau decision.

When Ms. Jayalalithaa was asked whether the AIADMK’s alliance with the CPI(M) would mean an indirect alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party, Mr. Karat intervened to say: “No.” The CPI(M) leader said: “We have decided to come to an understanding with the Telugu Desam and the Janata Dal (Secular). We have not entered into an electoral understanding with other political parties yet. We are discussing with them.”

Mr. Karat denied that the CPI(M) was compelled to go with the AIADMK because of the CPI. Recalling CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan’s earlier meeting with Ms. Jayalalithaa, he said both Left parties had a common understanding.

He said he had discussions with Ms. Jayalalithaa on a range of issues, including the terror attacks and the Sri Lankan Tamils issue. Stressing the need to have a strong government at the Centre to tackle and put down terrorism, he said it was also necessary to restore the economy.

Asked about the possibilities of the Pattali Makkal Katchi joining the alliance, Ms. Jayalalithaa said, “Wait and see.” Later in the day, CPI State secretary D. Pandian said his party and the CPI(M) would take all decisions together.

“The leaders in Tamil Nadu will meet soon and formally make an announcement about the alliance. Both parties are travelling on the same path without any deviation,” he added.

Mr. Pandian said the party’s priority was to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies.
