Transition going on in respect of vendors It requires an upgrade of home computers HYDERABAD: Deployment of IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) in place of IPv4 (version 4) is likely to take a very long time, even though IPv4 might exhaust its capacity by 2011. Both versions of IP are likely to co-exist. Upgrading the hardware is a major challenge in deploying the IPv6. These are the general observations of experts on the transition at the U.N.-sponsored Internet Governance Forum (IGF) held here on Friday, the third day of its third edition of global conference. Internet Protocol is the scheme of giving addresses. IP address is a unique identifier corresponding to each computer or device on an IP network. At present, there are two types in use: IPv4 and IPv6. Adiel Akplogan, CEO of AfriNIC and Internet numbers resource registry, said there were several speculations on what would happen, even as the IPv6 hadn’t actually taken off. He said 15 per cent of networks in the world were IPv6-ready or were doing something about it, which indicated that the two protocols would co-exist for a long time. Kurtis Lindqvist, Managing Director of Autonomica, a network operating company, said there was actually no demand from customers for the transition. Deployment of the IPv6-capable equipment in the core networks was a costly proposition. It was taking a long time as there was no difference in their earning, for nothing extra could be charged for accessing sites powered by IPv6. Jonne Soininen, head of Internet affairs of Nokia Siemens Networks, said the transition was already going on in respect of vendors. But it had been a painful process in enabling V6 in the equipment.
