New plan for restoration of heritage buildings

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna has said the Government would soon formulate a policy to encourage people to restore heritage buildings.

Addressing the Asian Regional Cooperation Conference on Heritage Management, Art Conservation, Education and Tourism here this week, Mr. Khanna said: “To encourage people to restore and conserve heritage buildings and monuments in the Capital, the Government is planning to evolve a policy of giving them transferable property rights and some kind of monetary benefit or remuneration.”

The L-G, who is also the Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority, said DDA was framing a policy for the Capital so that people make no transactions of their properties that come under the heritage category. Informing that the Government would constitute the Delhi Heritage Society, Mr. Khanna said it would work as an umbrella organisation and look into issues related to identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage in the city. “It would consist of representatives from ASI, Delhi Government, DDA, MCD and Delhi Police,” he added.
