It is being released hoping that Centre would help State in a significant way
CHENNAI: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi on Friday sanctioned Rs.500 crore to carry out immediate relief work in the flood-affected districts.
People in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, Tiruchi, Ramanathapuram, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chennai districts had been affected to a large extent and the need was to provide immediate relief, he said.
There was a need for relaying roads and repairing bridges and causeways, rebuilding homes and huts, and also helping farmers. The money would be used towards meeting these and other needs projected by District Collectors, he said, adding that the money was being released in the hope and belief that the Centre would come to the State’s aid in a significant way.
The Chief Minister will meet Collectors of the affected districts on December 8 in Chennai to discuss the relief and rehabilitation needs at length. But he said that he did not want wait till then to sanction money for the relief operations.
The meeting would take stock of the operations carried out so far and discuss timelines for the implementation of the rehabilitation measures. It would also discuss the permanent mechanisms that need to be installed/built in some places along rivers/sea to ensure that floodwater did not enter habitations after the first few showers.
Meanwhile, the second meeting of the Cabinet Sub-Committee constituted by the Chief Minister to oversee the relief operations will meet here on Saturday.
